VietNamNet Bridge – In 2005, the HCM City People’s Committee decided to establish the Lawrence S. Ting Community Support Fund.

With more than 20 billion dong granted by Phu My Hung Joint Venture Corporation, the Lawrence S. Ting Community Support Fund has carried out a programme called “Move forward with IT”, which aims to provide computers to 64 schools in all 64 provinces and cities throughout the country.

So far, the programme has delivered 30 computer labs to 19 provinces in southern, central regions and the Central Highlands. The Lawrence S. Ting Fund has also been engaged in other education support activities. For instance, in the past year, the fund has given 700 scholarships totaling 2 million dong. At present, it is working on a project to establish a junior high and a high school which are to be named after Lawrence S. Ting, the late chairman of Phu My Hung Corporation.

Responding to the fund’s call for education support, organisations which have been sponsored by the Lawrence S. Ting Fund such as the HCM City Society of Poor Patients, Vietnam Children’s Fund, and the Fatherland Front’s Fund for Poor People, also will use grants to support poor students, students in far away and mountainous regions, as well as upgrade schools to ensure higher teaching qualities.
